Birlinn are publishing three elegant new limited editions later this year, each produced with stunning illustration and beautifully packaged.
Robert Burns’ Tam o’ Shanter has achieved iconic status. Burns’ words paint images of such vivid substance that it took 200 years to discover a partner who could realise his vision and capture it in picture form. That partner was Alexander Goudie. His cycle of Burns paintings, worked on for many years, illustrates all the facets of this marvellous poem and are full of energy and life. Introduced and edited by Ted Cowan and Alan Riach of Glasgow University, this is not simply a beautiful book but the definitive edition of Burns masterpiece. The only book to have on your shelves for the 250th Burns anniversary in 2009.
Originally published in four volumes between 1845 and 1852, The Baronial and Ecclesiastical Antiquities of Scotland, with 240 superlative engravings, was packed with exquisite illustrations to and became the source for much Victorian Scottish architecture. This edition has been reduced to two casebound volumes, in real cloth with a protective slip-case, enabling many more to enjoy a classic architectural work of art.
John Thomson's Atlas of Scotland is a high-quality reproduction of the first large-scale atlas of Scotland organised by county. It provides an invaluable and accurate picture of Scotland prior to the Clearances and is also a highly significant milestone in the history of mapping. It contains 58 large format, double-page maps of mainland Scotland, the Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland. Two stunningly beautiful drawings illustrate the ‘Comparative heights of the principal mountains of Scotland’ and ‘Comparative lengths of the principal rivers of Scotland’. The book is case-bound in real cloth with a protective slip-case. Each copy is individually numbered and contains two introductory essays by Professor Charles W. Withers of the University of Edinburgh, and Chris Fleet and Paula Williams of the National Library of Scotland.

These new limited editions are only available direct from Birlinn Limited, and can be preordered by calling Booksource on 0845 370 0067. Customers who preorder before 1st October will get £25 discount.
