‘This book is a wonderful description of what it was like to live on a small Hebridean island’ – Sharma Krauskopf

‘A traditional but timely history of the culture, heritage and economy of a Hebridean community currently undergoing significant change’ – Katharine Briggs Judges’ report

Drawing on written accounts and oral history, legend and song, this is the story of Eigg and its inhabitants from the earliest times to the present day. It traces the changing landscapes and lifestyles from the bloodthirsty days of clan battles, remembered through myths and songs, to the development of crofting, the clearances and the effect of various landlords on the island. A comprehensive and colourful picture emerges, showing how the islanders reacted and survived. Eigg is a testament to the importance of Highland heritage, capturing the imagination of a community in the struggle to recreate an island identity. The story includes a vivid account of the community buy-out of Eigg in June 1997.

This is a revised and updated edition of the previous Polygon edition.

Born in France, Camille Dressler is a Director of the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust and runs The Isle of Eigg Craft Shop Ltd. A leading light in the community on the island, she is also an avid promoter and social entrepreneur.
