Ever been lost for words or just completely mystified by what you hear? This is a new series of pocket books designed to introduce some of the wealth of the spoken and written word in Scotland to those who may not be familiar with them. For the 600 selected Gaelic words, as well as a simple meaning, the context and background to the word will be explained, along with examples of use (and, as required) a pronunciation guide.

Forget about worthy dictionaries, this is a series dedicated to the enjoyment of language.

Alison Diack was born and raised in Aberdeen. She attended Aberdeen University where she completed her MA Honours Degree in Gaelic Studies in 1992. She received a doctorate for her research into Gaelic verse from Aberdeenshire seven years later. After leaving the university she completed a Postgraduate degree in secondary school teaching and has taught Gaelic to learners and native speakers in various secondary schools, as well as continuing to teach adults wherever possible. As a non-native speaker who has learned Gaelic to fluency, she is particularly interested in making knowledge of Gaelic language and culture more readily available to the general public and is keen to encourage interest in this essential part of Scotland’s heritage. She lives in Rothiemurchus, near Aviemore.
